How this site is funded

This site currently makes no money. It’s run by one person, costs a few pounds a month to host, and has no affiliate relationships, sponsorships or paid placements.

That will probably change. The intention is to apply to the affiliate programmes some of these providers run, because that’s the realistic way a site like this sustains the monthly fact-checking. When it happens, three things will be true, and you’ll be able to see all of them from the page you’re on:

The rules, whether or not we’re earning

• Payment never changes the ranking. The picker and comparison rank tools on how well they fit your situation. The scoring rules are the same for a tool that pays us and one that doesn’t.
• Options that pay nothing stay prominent. HMRC’s own free tool, free bank-linked software, free landlord and sole-trader tiers and cheap bridging software are featured because they’re often the right answer. Several will never pay a penny.
• Paid links are labelled. Commission-earning links are marked up as sponsored, in line with CAP/ASA guidance on identifying advertising, and a disclosure appears above the comparison table and in the footer. Links that earn nothing aren’t marked as sponsored — that would misdeclare a relationship that doesn’t exist.

What we’d never do

Accept payment for a higher ranking, a better rating, or removal of a “watch out”. If a provider ever asked, the answer would be no and the request would go in this page.

Not connected to HMRC

“HMRC-recognised” describes a product’s own status on HMRC’s list of compatible software. It is not an endorsement of this site, and this site is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by HMRC.
