Landlord Studio vs Hammock for MTD
Two purpose-built landlord platforms compared on price, joint-ownership handling, apps and accountant access.
Landlord Studio and Hammock are both purpose-built for landlords — property income is the whole point, not an afterthought bolted onto general accounting software. If you self-manage a small portfolio and want an app that speaks your language, these two are the natural shortlist. Here’s how they differ where it counts.
Side by side
| Landlord Studio | Hammock | |
|---|---|---|
| From | £0–£12 / mo | £8 / mo |
| Free tier | Yes — GO plan, up to 3 units | No — 30-day trial only |
| Joint ownership | Yes | Built-in (confirm with provider) |
| Bank feeds | Yes | Yes |
| Accountant can file (agent access) | View only | Yes |
| Self-employment income | No | No |
| Foreign property | Yes | No |
Where Landlord Studio wins
Landlord Studio has strong iOS and Android apps and handles joint ownership — you can set ownership percentages and have co-owners file separately. It also supports foreign property. The catch on the free GO plan is that it charges around £5 per MTD submission; the Pro plan includes free submissions and adds bank feeds. One limitation: accountants can view your records but can’t file on your behalf, so it’s less suited to an accountant-led setup.
Where Hammock wins
Hammock is built around real-time, per-property income tracking and includes an accountant portal — so if you want your accountant involved, Hammock’s agent access is a genuine advantage. It also handles joint ownership properly: it allocates income and expenses to each owner by ownership percentage and generates separate MTD submissions per owner under one licence. Pricing starts at £8 +VAT a month for up to three properties (no free plan — just a 30-day trial). It doesn’t support foreign property or self-employment income.
The verdict
- Co-owning couple: either — both split ownership properly. Hammock allocates by percentage and files per owner; Landlord Studio does the same and has a free tier.
- Accountant-led: Hammock, for the accountant portal and agent access.
- Overseas property: Landlord Studio (Hammock doesn’t cover it).
- One property, keep it free: only Landlord Studio still has a free tier — mind the ~£5 per-submission fee on GO, or look at RentalBux (free until March 2028).
